China’s population falls for the first time in 61 years

A total of 9.56 million people were born while 10.41 million people died in China last year, data from National Bureau of Statistics showed Tuesday. It is the first time that death outnumbered birth in China since the 1960s. Among China’s 34 provincial-level regions, 13 reported shrinking population last year. In 2019, only three provinces did so.
