China largest lithium battery consumer for fifth year

In 2021, China’s lithium battery industry supplied 324GWh. The China Center for Information Industry Development’s lithium battery index reached 307.6 in Q4 of 2021, more than three times that of 2017. 

China has been the biggest lithium battery consumer market now for five years. In 2021, the global market reached 545GWh, with China accounting for more than half of the total. China makes about 70 percent of the world’s power batteries.

Demand for new EVs is one of the main factors underpinning the success. Sales of EVs in China have reached 3.5 million, 13.4 percent of all vehicle sales. 

CATL and BYD dominate.  market. CATL installed a capacity of 5 GWh in April, with a market share of 38 percent of the market, with BYD not far behind with 4.3 GWh.
